Abstract

Gülay Bedir and Semra Demir

The general purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of primary school 4th and 5th graders about “peace” through use of metaphors. This study has been conducted on voluntary basis and according to the grounded theory, one of the qualitative research designs. Work group of this study contains 79 students studying at Ã?â??Ã?°bni Sina Primary School, located in the province of Tokat. This study was conducted as a class activity during the art lesson in the 14th week of the spring term of 2008-2009. When the metaphors students used for peace were analyzed at the end of the study, students were identified to associate positive meanings with peace. Besides, a consistency was recorded between the three things that students mentioned as reminding of peace and the figures they drew to express peace. The first three things associated with peace were “love” (love/joy), “respect for others’ opinions”, and “reconcilement”, respectively. “Happiness”, “fraternity”, “friendship”, “tolerance”, “Ataturk”, “flowers”, and “feelings” were counted among the first ten concepts related with peace.
