Birth weight is the single most important factor determining the survival chances of the Babies. One of the most important care givers is the nurses, so the recent developments in neonatal technology demands the nurses to have up to date knowledge regarding the care of the low birth-weight Babies. So as to identify the problems as early as possible and to provide need based care to promote optimum health in low birth-weight babies.
Objective of the study was to assess the Knowledge Regarding the Care of Low Birth Weight Babies (LBW) among the Nurses Working in selected Wards of BPKIHS.
A Descriptive Cross-sectional research design was adopted for the study to assess the Knowledge Regarding the Care of LBW Babies. A Pretested self administered Semi-structured questionnaire was used to assess the Knowledge of 54 nurses working in pediatric wards. Population enumeration technique was used for sampling. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used for data analysis.
Result of the study showed that median percentage of knowledge regarding on care of LBW Babies was 82%. The Median percentage of knowledge of staff nurse and senior staff Nurse was equal. The study revealed that there was significance association of knowledge with total experience in Paediatric ward and training on care of low birth weight baby.
Thus, the study concluded that knowledge regarding the care of LBW Babies among the nurses working in Paediatric wards is good.
